Social Situation Mapping + 10 Steps Poster (Dry-erase)

S$26.00

Use the newly revised and updated Social Situation Mapping teaching framework to help individuals figure out the unspoken social expectations within a situation based on what is happening at that moment and the people who are present. This visual tool explores what we call the Social Emotional Chain Reaction (SECR). See below for a deeper dive into the concept. This poster’s dry-erase surface allows educators, therapists and parents to use and reuse it across an infinite variety of situations (use dry-erase markers only). It also outlines the 10-step teaching sequence to deepen the learning. Dimensions: 18" width x 24" height. (For examples of filled-in maps and a blank, reusable template, check out the book Social Situation Mapping.)

The Framework

What’s happening around us influences our thoughts and feelings which in turn influences what we do and say. Social Situation Mapping, a core teaching framework within the Social Thinking Methodology, is a visual template that helps us figure out the spoken and unspoken expectations within a given situation based on what is happening, where we are, and the people present. This metacognitive tool also explores a fundamental social concept we call the Social Emotional Chain Reaction: What a person does or says in a specific situation has an impact on how others think and feel. How others think and feel in turn influences what they say or do, and that ultimately affects how the (original) person feels. This is designed to be a proactive visual tool that teaches from the individual’s point of view (i.e., inside out teaching) and how others impact their thoughts and feelings.

We start by teaching individuals to observe others across different situations and identify words or actions they notice and the impact this has on their own thoughts, emotions, reactions, and responses. Over time, we gradually extend the learning to teach the full Social Emotional Chain Reaction by having individuals observe their own choices within particular situations, recognize how their own words or actions may impact others’ thoughts, feelings, and responses, and ultimately how that has an impact on them. Social Situation Mapping is visual teaching tool that helps individuals make sense of the complicated process of how we all affect one another.
